By state
Rolled up from the agencies that match the filters. YoY compares only agencies that reported in both periods. Vs. pre-COVID is weighted by current ridership and covers agencies with a pre-COVID baseline. An agency that runs several modes counts in full under each mode filter.
Methodology and data sources
Data sources
- Monthly trips, miles and hours: NTD Raw Monthly Ridership, with no NTD adjustments or estimates.
- Operating cost, fares, annual trips: NTD TS2.1 time series, fiscal year 2024 and 2023 from the same file.
- Agency identity, urbanized area, modes: NTD 2024 Agency Information.
- Funding mix: NTD fiscal year 2024 Funding Sources.
Time periods
- Latest months and Incomplete Data: the Monitor shows every month NTD has posted, even before every agency has filed it. On the chart, the months in which an agency shown has not yet filed one of its modes are plotted as filed so far and shaded gray as Incomplete Data; the note under the chart names the missing agency and mode, or for group lines how many agencies are still missing. The shading clears once the late reports arrive in a later release.
- Monthly, as reported: each month's figure exactly as the agency reported it to NTD. Group lines add up the agencies that reported that month.
- 12-month total: the latest 12 reported months, summed. A window needs at least 11 of its 12 months reported.
- YoY %: the 12-month total against the 12 months before it. For annual-only reporters, fiscal year 2024 against fiscal year 2023.
- Vs. pre-COVID: the 12-month total against the same 12 months seven years earlier (). For annual-only reporters, fiscal year 2024 against fiscal year 2019.
- FY: the agency's fiscal year ending in 2024.
Definitions
- Trips (UPT): unlinked passenger trips. Every boarding counts, transfers included.
- Revenue miles and hours: miles and hours vehicles run in passenger service.
- Trips per hour: trips divided by revenue hours.
- Cost per ride: operating cost divided by trips, both fiscal year.
- Farebox recovery: fare revenue divided by operating cost.
Groups and totals
- Chart group lines: monthly reporters only, counting only the trips, miles and hours run in that mode. YoY compares only agencies reporting in both periods.
- Combined agencies: summed into one line or column. A month counts only when every component reports it.
- Mode filter: on the chart, each agency line counts only the chosen modes. The tables list agencies that run a chosen mode and show their figures across all modes.
Known limitations
- The raw file does not fill in late reports, so a missing month can understate an agency until it files. The chart shades those months; the tables' 12-month figures include them as filed so far.
- A mode that stops reporting while others continue lowers the agency total without tripping the 11-of-12 rule.
- Annual-only (rural) reporters file once a year and are not on the chart.
